“Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.”
One day, after traveling back into town from my part-time job, I met my husband in the driveway. My first thought was, “Why is he home?” Then came the words that I secretly knew were coming but dreaded hearing them aloud, “Honey, I lost my job”.
Being a stay-at-home mom while teaching part-time at a boys home left me with so many questions. How were we going to pay the bills? Were we going to be able to feed our toddler and newborn while providing for their needs? When would another job open back up? Did I need to go back to work full-time?
My stress level was at an all-time high. Maybe you can relate.
You know, it’s one thing when you are unable to provide for yourself, but it is an entirely different ballgame when your kids are involved.
Those 7 1/2 months seemed like an eternity! After the reality set in, and the money dissipated, the only direction that Greg and I could look was up. God showered so many blessings over us during that time and we learned to be grateful for everything…and I mean EVERYTHING!
We were surrounded by people who were walking in our shoes through our Financial Peace University class at church. The boys home where I worked supplied us with food along with baby products. I was able to learn how to coupon which enabled us to bring home items for free. Greg had a co-worker who provided us with shoes, a car seat, and many more items for our toddler.
God showed us in a mighty way that He is good and that His mercies endure forever. Greg and I were drowning in debt and thought we needed more money. God was showing us how to live on less and how to budget. These are tools in which we still use today. God showed us how to learn contentment and to be thankful for anything and everything that came our way.
The best part of this story is that I have never, nor will I ever, forget this chapter in our life.
When I reread Psalm 107 this week, I was reminded of all the good things that God wants to provide for all of us. I made a list of things we need to do and what He has promised to do for us. I thought I would share this list with you so that you will never forget that He is good and His mercies endure forever.
